Coach Camm: Go HAM on Turkey Day
Give Thanks with no Regrets
Everyone has a plan on Thanksgiving for dealing with the deluge of calories the day brings.
“I’m not going to eat for 24 hours before”
“I’m going to fill up on turkey and avoid dessert”
“I’m going to run a 5k after not having exercised in 10 years”
Or my personal favorite, “I’m just going to drink red wine until I pass out.”
As the warrior poet Mike Tyson once said “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth” and everyone on Thanksgiving gets punched in the mouth with delicious food and drink that leaves their waistlines screaming “No Mas!”
And that’s fine. In fact, THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT.
Food plays many roles to us crazy humans. It of course gives us life and nourishment, energy, and vitality. It can also kill us, make us sick, overweight, and make us feel bad.
Many of the foods that do the former also do the latter.
The only difference is context.
We all know that we need water to survive. But drinking too much water can kill you.
Too much water can cause hyponatremia which is the dilution of sodium in your blood – and you go bye-bye.
Context matters.
In the context of Thanksgiving, food plays another role.
It’s a celebration. It’s a reason to gather with loved ones.
It’s an opportunity to give thanks in a year that seems bereft of those opportunities.
This year Thanksgiving may look different for many people, but one thing should hopefully stay the same – you’re there to eat and appreciate good food.
Do so without guilt as long as you keep in mind the context of the day and what it means. You don't have to gorge yourself - but if you want to go right ahead.
If the excess calories really concern you then try to make it up with activity. Get a few thousand extra steps or workout for a half hour longer than normal.
And wait to pass out until you’ve actually had your full.
